"One of the best parts of growing older is that you gain so much more perspective on yourself, your history and the world. Life grows richer, and everything has much more depth: food, music, emotions, love. Each year you live adds another piece toward making you a whole. The closer you get to it, the less scary the world becomes. Things start to make more sense and you let go of the false ideals and desires you held fast to in youth. You retain your original core but then many more layers are added and you become like a fine wine. Complex and full, enriched by every experience throughout your life."

When I was about this age I lived in a barn shaped house and shared an enormous room with my sisters. The carpet was a horrible soft pink and I loved it. There were rose buds on the closet door handles. We had two litters of kittens a year and there was baby peach grove just outside our window. Behind the house was a farm field - we called it the “moor” after the secret garden. We had a pet bird, two baby squirrels, two dogs and 5? cats. I remember dad hung a rattlesnake he killed on the fence one summer, later a hawk swooped down and took it. We had a well stocked graveyard… the cats killed the bird, two of the kittens died, one of the dogs, a turtle, some caterpillars. I have a journal somewhere full of kitten pictures, tales of mice and bike wrecks.

re-visions: why divinity school?

This is a post by one of my favorite people in the world. It is beautiful. And she is beautiful.

pilartimpane:

in the last few weeks, i’ve had a lot of people ask me through notes, kind phone calls, and conversations, through my mother, through various means - why are you going to divinity school? are you going to become a minister?

this reminds me of when i became a missionary.

“so, what’s the deal?…
